WHEN A GAME DISAPPEARS: STARTING AN ANTHEM FAN FICTION WRITING PROJECT

There’s a strange feeling that comes when a game you’ve spent time in is preparing to disappear.

Recently, I revisited trailers and lore videos for Anthem, a game known as much for its ambitious worldbuilding as for its complicated history. With the announcement that the servers would officially go offline on January 12, 2026, I realized something unexpected — soon, this world will no longer be playable.

But stories don’t always end when servers shut down.

Sometimes, that’s where new stories begin.

Why Write Fan Fiction About Anthem?

Like many players, I was drawn to Anthem because of its atmosphere: flying through storms, exploring Bastion, and uncovering fragments of lore hidden throughout the codex. Despite the challenges the game faced at launch, its universe always felt larger than what we experienced on screen.

That realization sparked an idea.

What if fan fiction could become a way to explore the stories that were never fully told?

Fan fiction offers writers a unique creative space. Instead of building a world from scratch, you step into an existing universe and ask new questions:

- What happened between missions?
- What stories were unfolding beyond the main campaign?
- What comes next after the ending?

For writers, it becomes both practice and exploration — a way to strengthen storytelling skills while celebrating a shared fictional world.

A Writing Experiment

As someone who enjoys creative writing, I’ve been thinking about using this moment as a writing exercise. Not to replace my original projects, but to keep creativity active and experiment with storytelling in a familiar universe.

Writing regularly helps prevent creative stagnation. Fan fiction removes some of the pressure by allowing writers to focus on character, dialogue, and atmosphere rather than starting from zero.

Recently, I read a short fan story online — mostly dialogue between two characters — and it reminded me how powerful even small stories can be when they capture the spirit of a world people care about.

That experience inspired me to start something new.

Introducing: The Anthem Archive (A Blog Series)

Over the coming months, I’ll be starting a blog series dedicated to exploring Anthem through writing and reflection.

This series will include:

- 📖 Fan fiction stories set in the Anthem universe
- ✍️ Writing process updates and creative reflections
- 🌍 Lore discussions and worldbuilding analysis
- 💬 Community discussions about favorite moments and interpretations

The goal isn’t perfection — it’s exploration and shared creativity.

If you’re a writer, gamer, or someone who enjoys seeing how stories evolve, this series is an open invitation to follow along.

Why This Blog Exists

Part of writing is simply showing up and creating consistently. Another part is sharing that creativity with others who understand why fictional worlds matter long after we leave them.

As Anthem approaches its shutdown, this project feels like a way to preserve inspiration rather than lose it.

Games may go offline, but imagination doesn’t have to.

Join the Journey

If this sounds interesting to you, consider following the blog so you don’t miss future entries in the series. I’ll be posting updates regularly as the project develops.

And if you’ve ever written fan fiction — or thought about starting — I’d love to hear what worlds inspired you to keep writing after the story ended.

The next entry will begin the first Archive story.

Until then, the writing begins.

Archive Log Updated — New entries coming soon.
