ANTHEM ARCHIVE FILES: REBUILDING IN AN ALREADY OLD WORLD
Stepping into an already established world is one of the most unique creative challenges a writer can take on.
Instead of building everything from nothing, you begin inside a living universe — one filled with history, characters, and stories that already matter to people. The challenge then becomes finding ways to add new ideas while respecting the legacy that already exists.
That balance has become one of the most enjoyable parts of writing this story set within the world of Anthem.
Writing Alongside Legacy Characters
One of my main goals while writing is making sure that new characters feel naturally connected to the existing lore. When original characters interact with familiar figures from the game, the focus shifts toward capturing authentic voices — how they speak, how they react, and how their personalities shape each conversation.
Writing dialogue for legacy characters means studying how they behaved in the game: their tone, humor, and emotional rhythm. The aim is to create moments that feel believable both to longtime fans and to readers discovering the world for the first time.
Two characters in particular have been a joy to write: Sentinel Brin and Yarrow.
Sentinel Brin’s quirky personality creates opportunities for lively dialogue and unexpected interactions. Her attempts to connect with others — especially moments where she steps outside her comfort zone — make her scenes feel human and grounded. In the game, she often tries to form bonds with the Freelancer, even celebrating completed missions alongside fellow Sentinels at the local pub. Bringing that same energy into the story opens the door for meaningful character-driven moments.
Yarrow, known for narrating the Fall of Freemark cinematic, carries a different presence. His perspective adds weight and historical depth to the narrative, helping anchor new events within the larger legacy of the world.
Bringing side characters like these to the forefront allows the story to explore threads that already exist in the fabric of Anthem’s universe while giving them new purpose.
Making the World Feel Fresh
A major goal of this project is to make the world feel both familiar and new.
The story explores events through character perspectives — how they interpret challenges, how they see their world, and what it feels like to pilot a Javelin from a first-person point of view. Experiencing flight from inside the armor becomes more than action; it becomes personal storytelling.
The Forge also plays a central role. Conversations with mechanics and builders help ground the world in tangible reality, showing the labor and expertise required to maintain a Javelin. These quieter, technical moments add depth and realism that help the larger plot move forward.
Characters like Zoe, whose grounded personality and backstory lend themselves naturally to storytelling, help bridge the gap between lore and lived experience within the world.
Life Beyond the Battlefield
Another aspect I want to explore more deeply is everyday life aboard a Strider.
How do crews live while constantly traveling?
What routines keep these massive machines operational?
What quiet moments exist between missions?
These smaller details allow space for reflection and character growth, balancing large cinematic events with intimate storytelling inspired by the game’s visual storytelling and cinematics.
Inspired by What Could Have Been
Part of the inspiration for this story comes from the era when Anthem: Next was being developed. Concept art showing new locations, enemies, and vehicles sparked excitement about where the universe might go next.
This project acts, in many ways, as an unofficial continuation — an exploration of possibilities that never fully reached players but still live within the imagination of the community.
Diving Deeper Into the Lore
There is an incredible amount of lore waiting to be explored.
Elements like the radio show Crimson Lancer, the work of the Arcanists, and characters such as Matti, Erryl, and Sumner offer opportunities to expand the world’s intellectual and cultural side. Understanding how Arcanists conduct research, how Javelins are constructed within the Forge, and how ember-cored seals function adds layers that enrich the narrative experience.
These details aren’t just background information — they are storytelling tools that help readers feel immersed in a believable world.
A Story for Fans and New Readers Alike
Ultimately, the goal is to create a story that welcomes everyone.
For longtime players, it offers a deeper journey into familiar lore. For new readers, it serves as an accessible entry point into a rich science-fiction universe without requiring prior knowledge.
The hope is that each element — characters, locations, and history — can be introduced in a way that feels natural, engaging, and easy to digest.
Because at its core, writing in an established world isn’t just about continuing a story.
It’s about discovering new perspectives inside a universe people already care about — and inviting others to experience it for the first time.
